Laparoscopic gallbladder removal through keyhole incisions — the global gold standard for gallstones, performed by senior GI & laparoscopic surgeons.
Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, the small pouch under the liver that stores bile. They are very common in North India — particularly in women — and cause attacks of pain in the upper-right abdomen, typically after fatty meals. Once stones cause symptoms, attacks tend to recur and can lead to serious complications like infection of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), jaundice or pancreatitis.
The established, evidence-based treatment for symptomatic gallstones is removing the gallbladder — not the stones alone, which simply re-form. You live completely normally without a gallbladder.

A simple abdominal ultrasound — done in-house — confirms gallstones in minutes. Blood tests check liver function, and if a stone is suspected in the main bile duct, further imaging (MRCP) is arranged before surgery so there are no surprises in theatre.
Silent stones found incidentally often need no treatment — only observation. But once stones cause symptoms, medicines that "dissolve" stones rarely work, take years, and stones recur when stopped. Diet control reduces attacks but does not remove the risk of complications.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder through 3–4 keyhole incisions under general anaesthesia, usually in 30–60 minutes. At Bawa Hospital it is performed by senior GI & laparoscopic surgeons with HD imaging in laminar-airflow theatres. Most patients go home within 24 hours and return to work within a week.
We recommend surgery only when it is genuinely the best option for you — and explain why, in plain language, before you decide.
Surgery in the morning; walking and sips by evening in most cases.
Discharge for most patients with simple oral painkillers.
Light activity and desk work; small dressings come off.
Normal diet rebuilt step-wise; full routine including exercise by 3–4 weeks.
Timelines are typical for uncomplicated cases — your surgeon will give you a personalised plan.
The final cost depends on the technique used, the complexity of your case, the type of room you choose and your length of stay. After your consultation you receive a clear, itemised estimate — before you decide anything.
Bring your policy details or insurance card and our front-desk team will help you with the paperwork and coordination with your insurer from admission through discharge.
Bawa Hospital in Ludhiana treats patients from across Punjab — including Chandigarh, Mohali, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala, Bathinda, Moga and Khanna — as well as Delhi NCR, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
For outstation patients we plan the consultation, pre-operative tests and surgery to minimise trips — often completed in a single visit, with follow-up support on WhatsApp.
For symptomatic stones, no reliable option exists — stone-dissolving medicines rarely work, and stones re-form if only the stones are removed. Cholecystectomy is the worldwide standard of care because it removes the disease, not just the stones.
Yes. Bile flows directly from the liver to the intestine. A small minority notice looser stools initially, which almost always settles. Long-term dietary restriction is not required for most people.
Three to four small incisions of 5–10 mm. Scarring is minimal and pain is far less than open surgery. Open conversion is needed only rarely, for safety, in very inflamed or complex cases.
Usually yes, with proper pre-operative optimisation. Our in-house physicians and anaesthesia team assess and prepare you so surgery is as safe as possible.
Each attack risks acute cholecystitis, jaundice or pancreatitis — all of which turn a planned 24-hour keyhole procedure into emergency treatment of a sicker patient. If your stones are symptomatic, plan surgery on your terms rather than waiting for an emergency.
