Hernia — Our Centre of Excellence

What is a hernia?

A hernia is a weakness or gap in the abdominal wall through which internal tissue pushes out, appearing as a bulge — most commonly in the groin (inguinal), at the navel (umbilical) or through a previous operation scar (incisional). Hernias never heal on their own; they only enlarge with time, and the only cure is surgical repair.

Hernia surgery is Bawa Hospital’s flagship speciality. Our dedicated Hernia & Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Institute, led by Prof. (Dr.) Ashvind Bawa, handles everything from routine laparoscopic repairs to complex recurrent hernias and loss-of-domain reconstructions using Component Separation techniques.

Common causes

  • ✓ Congenital weakness of the abdominal wall
  • ✓ Heavy lifting and straining
  • ✓ Chronic cough or constipation
  • ✓ Previous abdominal surgery (incisional hernia)
  • ✓ Obesity, smoking and weak tissue healing

Experiencing any of these symptoms?

Common symptoms

  • ✓ A visible bulge in the groin, navel or near a scar — more prominent on standing, coughing or straining
  • ✓ Dragging discomfort or aching at the bulge, worse by evening
  • ✓ A bulge that slips back when lying down
  • ✓ Gradual increase in size over months

See a doctor urgently for

  • ✓ A bulge that suddenly becomes hard, very painful and cannot be pushed back (obstruction/strangulation — an emergency)

Diagnosis

How is it diagnosed?

Most hernias are diagnosed by clinical examination alone. Ultrasound or CT is used selectively — for unclear swellings, obesity, recurrent hernias or planning complex abdominal wall reconstruction, where a CT "roadmap" of your abdominal wall guides the repair strategy.

Treatment Options

Your treatment options, honestly explained

Non-surgical management

There is no medicine, belt or exercise that closes a hernia. Trusses only hide the bulge while the defect enlarges. Watchful waiting is reasonable only for selected small, symptom-free hernias — and even then, with a surgeon reviewing you periodically.

Surgical treatment at Bawa Hospital

We offer the full spectrum: laparoscopic (keyhole) mesh repair for most inguinal and umbilical hernias — less pain, earlier return to work — plus open mesh repair where appropriate, and advanced Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (Component Separation, sublay/retromuscular mesh) for large, recurrent or complex incisional hernias. The technique is matched to your hernia, not the other way around.

We recommend surgery only when it is genuinely the best option for you — and explain why, in plain language, before you decide.

Recovery

What recovery looks like

Day 0–1

Most keyhole repairs go home the same day or next morning.

Week 1

Walking from day one; desk work usually within a few days.

Week 2–4

Progressive return to full activity; avoid heavy lifting.

Week 6

Unrestricted activity for most routine repairs; complex reconstructions follow a personalised plan.

Timelines are typical for uncomplicated cases — your surgeon will give you a personalised plan.

Cost & Insurance

Transparent pricing, no surprises

What decides the cost?

The final cost depends on the technique used, the complexity of your case, the type of room you choose and your length of stay. After your consultation you receive a clear, itemised estimate — before you decide anything.

Using health insurance?

Bring your policy details or insurance card and our front-desk team will help you with the paperwork and coordination with your insurer from admission through discharge.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is mesh safe?

Modern surgical mesh is extensively studied and safe, and dramatically lowers recurrence compared to stitch-only repair in adults. Problems attributed to mesh are overwhelmingly problems of poor technique or infection control — which is why hernia repair at a dedicated high-volume centre matters.

Laparoscopic or open repair — which is better?

Both, for the right patient. Keyhole repair means less pain and faster recovery, ideal for most groin and bilateral hernias. Open repair remains excellent for certain hernias and patients. We do both at high volume and recommend what fits your case.

My hernia came back after surgery elsewhere. Can it be fixed?

Yes — recurrent and multiply-recurrent hernias are precisely what our AWR Institute exists for. These repairs need planning, imaging and advanced techniques like Component Separation; they should be done at a specialised centre.

What happens if I ignore my hernia?

It will slowly enlarge, and carries a lifelong risk of obstruction or strangulation — a surgical emergency with a far riskier operation. Planned repair is a routine, safe procedure; emergency repair is not.

How soon can I lift weights after repair?

Light activity resumes within days. For gym and heavy lifting we typically advise a graded return from 4–6 weeks for routine repairs, personalised to your hernia and repair type.
