Hysterectomy (Uterus Removal)

Keyhole uterus removal for the women who genuinely need it — and an honest second opinion for the many who don’t.

Hysterectomy — Only When Truly Needed

What is hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, most often for large fibroids, heavy bleeding unresponsive to other treatment, severe prolapse, adenomyosis or certain pre-cancerous conditions. Done for the right reason, it is life-changing surgery. Done for the wrong reason, it is an operation a woman never needed — which is why our gynaecologists first exhaust uterus-preserving options and openly welcome second-opinion consultations.

Diagnosis

How is it diagnosed?

Evaluation includes pelvic examination, ultrasound (in-house), blood counts and where needed hysteroscopy or endometrial sampling — establishing precisely why the bleeding or pain is happening. The diagnosis decides the treatment; hysterectomy is one option on the list, not the starting point.

Treatment Options

Your treatment options, honestly explained

Non-surgical management

Depending on the cause: hormonal treatment, medicated IUS devices, fibroid-shrinking medication, or minor procedures like hysteroscopic polyp/fibroid removal can control symptoms while preserving the uterus — especially important for women who may want children. We offer all of these first, where appropriate.

Surgical treatment at Bawa Hospital

When hysterectomy is genuinely indicated, we perform it laparoscopically (TLH) in most cases — 3–4 keyhole incisions, less pain, 1–2 day stay and return to routine in about two weeks, compared to six after open surgery. Whether ovaries are preserved is discussed individually — for most pre-menopausal women they are retained to avoid sudden menopause.

We recommend surgery only when it is genuinely the best option for you — and explain why, in plain language, before you decide.

Recovery

What recovery looks like

Day 0–2

Keyhole surgery; walking the same evening; discharge in 1–2 days.

Week 1

Light routine at home; desk work often possible.

Week 2–3

Most household and office routine resumes.

Week 4–6

Full activity; internal healing confirmed at follow-up.

Timelines are typical for uncomplicated cases — your surgeon will give you a personalised plan.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a hysterectomy?

A fair question — and sometimes the answer is no. Heavy bleeding and small fibroids often respond to medication, hormonal IUS or smaller procedures. Bring your reports for a frank assessment; if uterus-preserving treatment can work for you, we will say so.

Will removing the uterus change my hormones or bring early menopause?

The uterus itself makes no hormones — periods stop, but menopause does not arrive early if the ovaries are preserved, which is our default in pre-menopausal women unless there is a specific reason otherwise.

Laparoscopic or open — does it matter?

For recovery, considerably: keyhole hysterectomy means less pain, a shorter stay and return to routine in about half the time. Open surgery is reserved for very large uteri or specific situations.

Will hysterectomy affect intimacy?

After full healing (6–8 weeks), most women report intimacy unchanged — and often improved, freed from bleeding and pain. We discuss any individual concerns openly before surgery.

How long will I be away from work?

Desk work often resumes within 2 weeks after laparoscopic hysterectomy; physically demanding work takes 4–6 weeks. Your team will personalise this.
